About the Artist

Stephanie WoodStephanie Wood grew up in the natural grandeur and the dark and muted greens of British Columbia, Canada.  Following two years of study in Fashion Design, and a short career designing high fashion clothing for trendy boutiques during the late 1960’s, Stephanie did a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, majoring in Visual Arts.  Here she discovered, in this natural setting of subdued hues, that her palette is strong and vibrant and Mediterranean in scope.

It was only some years later, arriving on the Greek island of Cyprus, that her colours were instantly at home, the radiant light a revelation and a joy.  A Secondary Teaching Degree followed, and then several years of teaching a spectrum of art subjects in the British Columbia public school system.

Wanderlust struck, and the spirit of adventure, and the artist went off to Israel where she designed colourful and dramatic costumes for a group of singers, dancers, mime artists and musicians, who concertized throughout the country.  Marriage followed, and Stephanie went to California with her husband Michael, where she completed a Boots TwoMasters of Biblical Studies and a Masters of Divinity, the subject of spirituality being close to her heart.

It used to be said that life begins at forty.
Stephanie and Michael bought an old stone ruin in Cyprus the year the artist turned that significant age, and spent some years restoring it.  Her home and walled garden remain a never ending source of pleasure and delight, as do her Cypriot friends and neighbors in the traditional culture of the Greek Cypriot village community in which the artist and her husband still live, more than 20 years later.

Stephanie Wood’s immediately recognizable style is highly graphic and characterized by the use of bold and vibrant colour , depicting rich interiors, magic worlds and mysterious gardens.  Some of these worlds grow out of ethnic objects or textiles from Central Asian migratory tribes.  Her paintings revel in a natural world embued with the presence of the Creator.  Her textile paintings celebrate man’s deep heart and nomadic longings.

Stephanie Wood has shown her work internationally, with exhibitions in the U.K., France, Israel and Cyprus.
